Pre-workout products, as the name suggests, are specifically designed to be taken before your workout. They contain essential nutrients that prepare you and your muscles for the upcoming workout and support you on your way to new personal bests! But how do they work?
First of all, it depends on... which type of booster you are taking . Usually, the only distinction made is between... “Stim” boosters and “Pump” boosters There are differences. However, the majority of products on the market fall somewhere in between: Most pre-workout boosters contain both stimulants (primarily caffeine) and ingredients designed to improve blood flow to the muscles. Another, relatively new category is the products often called "cardio boosters," which were previously also commonly referred to as fat burners. In addition to stimulating ingredients, they also contain substances associated with increased fat burning.
Many boosters also contain other ingredients that have a positive effect on physical performance, such as for example creatine or beta-alanine .
The stimulants in the booster stimulate your central nervous system. Fatigue fades away, and you feel motivated, concentrated, and focused. Simply put, you feel like you could move mountains. Some scientific studies have shown that Caffeine, in addition to its mental/cognitive effects, can also increase strength and endurance performance .
The amino acid L-theanine works synergistically with caffeine. While caffeine increases alertness, wakefulness, and concentration, L-theanine has calming properties. In combination, the two substances create a balance between stimulation and relaxation, resulting in improved cognitive performance and reduced caffeine-related side effects. An improved mood can also be observed when people take caffeine and L-theanine together. Our new Meta Cut capsules are just such a " cardio booster ." The convenient capsules can be optimally dosed individually before cardio training and, in addition to caffeine and L-theanine, also contain synephrine, forskolin, acetyl-L-carnitine, important B vitamins, and other vital substances related to fat metabolism.
Besides stimulating and metabolism-boosting pre-workout products, there are now numerous boosters that primarily aim to improve blood flow. Arnold Schwarzenegger himself raved about the ever-popular pump in the famous documentary "Pumping Iron"—a feeling of full, blood-filled muscles. Beyond the fact that improved blood flow optimizes nutrient supply to the muscles and facilitates the removal of metabolic waste products generated during training, the pump also contributes to a better mind-muscle connection. Many athletes find it easier to target specific muscles when they are better supplied with blood.
Most pre-workout boosters contain the following ingredients to promote the pump, i.e., muscle blood flow: Amino acids L-arginine and L-citrulline L-arginine is used in various ways. While L-arginine is the direct precursor to the body's own signaling molecule nitric oxide (NO), L-citrulline, as an L-arginine metabolite, is able to indirectly increase arginine levels in the blood. The nitric oxide produced from L-arginine signals the muscles in the blood vessels to relax. Consequently, the blood vessels dilate, thereby improving blood flow.
In addition to L-arginine and L-citrulline, various plant extracts have also proven effective. They can increase the conversion of L-arginine into nitric oxide by upregulating the responsible enzymes. Examples include the plant extracts and powders enoSTIM® and Careflow® used in our Mega Mass Pump . The former was even awarded the prestigious Nutraingredients Award for its scientifically proven efficacy.
Antioxidants, such as vitamin C , can help stabilize nitric oxide in the blood, or slow its breakdown. This may enhance the blood flow-enhancing effects of the other ingredients – however, there is some evidence that excessive amounts of antioxidants could hinder other training adaptations in the body, which is why one should not overdo it with pre-workout intake.
Pre-workout boosters are a great tool to enhance enjoyment and performance during your workouts. Any athlete who wants to get the most out of their training and their body will benefit greatly from using a pre-workout booster. Whether for strength training or cardio, with or without caffeine, it all comes down to personal preference – we're sure you'll find a booster in our range that perfectly suits you and your needs!
